What Are The Different Types Of Liposuction in Miami
There are a lot of choices when it comes to liposuction and you’re going to hear lots of hype on the radio and television and different websites about all different techniques when thinking about liposuction. Let me give you a quick introductory course in liposuction. Liposuction was invented by a doctor that got the idea that you could take a hollow tube, put it on suction and pass it through fat and remove it. And that work great but the early problem was there was a considerable amount of blood loss. The next step was someone who thought, “Gee, we can put medication into the fat first and then suction the fat out and that would be better.” And that’s a technique called tumescent liposuction.
Tumescent liposuction is what everyone doing liposuction today does. In one form of another everyone is doing tumescent liposuction and all that means is that you're putting fluid with a little bit of lidocaine which is anesthetic and a little bit of epinephrine which is a special medication that makes your blood vessels shrink down to tiny size in order to make the operation very safe. The amount of blood loss these days with liposuction is very, very low and the operation actually is very safe.
There are choices in the technique that can be used and the technology that goes along with it. I personally prefer traditional liposuction. That means that the cannula for the suction is in my hand and I'm able to sculpt and shape exactly the way I want it to be. What I see at the end of the operation, generally speaking, is what you're going to see once you’re fully healed. It’s very predictable and it’s very safe.
The next step is ultrasonic liposuction and this is true of ultrasonic and Vaser liposuction or something that is marketed as liposelection. This is a technique where a solid tube is passed through the fat that is emitting ultrasound waves and those ultrasound waves break up the fat cells then you do regular liposuction or traditional liposuction to remove the fat. It really has never been shown to give you an improved result although, it does make the doctor’s job in taking the fat out a little bit easier. I generally don’t prefer to use that technique because I don’t like to increase my patient’s risk without really seeing an improvement in the end result and by using that energy, you increase the amount of heat that’s generated. And in some cases, patients have been burned by the energy as it’s being released from that solid tube.
So you need to be careful when thinking about doing things like ultrasonic or Vaser liposuction. An experience hands, it can give you nice results but there is a greater risk.
The next step in a technology is laser liposuction. These are things like Smart Lipo, Lipo-Light and other laser devices. The way that works is that there’s a very thin cannula that has a laser at the end of it and the laser very slowly gets pass through the fat and burns the fat and then you do regular liposuction afterwards.
There's a big misunderstanding about Smart Lipo and other types of laser liposuction. People think that somehow it’s a magic laser and there’s not really liposuction being done and that couldn’t be further from the truth.
When you have Smart Lipo or any other laser lipo procedure a laser is being used to burn the fat first and then you’re having traditional regular liposuction immediately to follow that. So don’t think that having Smart Lipo is not liposuction. In fact, it’s regular liposuction with the addition of a laser and so by using a laser you are increasing the risk to that procedure as well. That’s why I recommend traditional liposuction to most of my patients.
